Presentation Title:

Preterm birth in Nigeria: Confronting the realities and championing change

Abstract

Each year, thousands of newborns in Nigeria begin life under dire circumstances born prematurely, underweight, or critically ill. Unlike developed nations, Nigeria lacks a national health service and the essential infrastructure needed to support neonatal survival. Access to incubators, oxygen, and even basic medical care is not guaranteed. For many families, hope becomes the only lifeline and tragically, it often fades too soon.

Nigeria continues to rank among the highest globally for neonatal mortality. The challenges are multifaceted: a shortage of trained healthcare professionals, erratic electricity supply, limited medical equipment, and the absence of robust neonatal care policies. These systemic gaps turn every day into a fight for survival for vulnerable infants.

In response to this crisis, the Déin Neonatal Foundation is working to bridge the gap. The foundation equips hospitals with life-saving tools such as incubators and CPAP machines, supplies essential consumables, and trains caregivers to deliver competent neonatal care. Beyond clinical support, it also provides emotional and practical assistance to families navigating the trauma of premature birth.
