Affiliate-stigma among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder in Vietnam
Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to investigate affiliate stigma among 11 parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who were receiving treatment at the National Children’s Hospital and five special education centers in Hanoi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews guided by a semi-structured questionnaire consisting of five open-ended questions. The findings revealed that many parents experienced negative emotions associated with raising a child with ASD, felt ashamed or embarrassed by their children’s behaviors, and tended to avoid social interactions. These findings highlight the need for educational intervention programs designed to reduce affiliate stigma among parents of children with ASD.
